Magic Glazing Tips & Tricks
Sgraffito
Sgraffito is an Italian term meaning “scratched”. This technique works by applying multiple layers of colour to your ceramic item, then scratching in your design to reveal the initial layer.
For example, experiment with painting one layer of red, then another layer of yellow on top. Use a sharp tool or even the back of a paintbrush to scratch in your pattern/design. The result should show your pattern in the initial layer of red, surrounded by the contrasting yellow on top.
Masking
Masking is a technique used to create crisp lines on your ceramic item. This works by first placing masking tape on your piece in a specific pattern, then painting the item. You can paint the entire piece, even over the tape.
When you are done, carefully peel back the tape, revealing clean, sharp lines. This is a great way to incorporate the negative space in your design.
